The rack connects the steering wheel movement to the front wheels. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the hydraulic system helps move the rack with less effort.
On older BMW models, especially selected E-Series 1 Series and 3 Series vehicles, the steering rack can develop leaks, knocking, play, stiffness or internal wear.
