What is an instrument cluster?

The instrument cluster is the dashboard display unit that provides the driver with key vehicle information. Depending on the vehicle, it may display speed, engine RPM, fuel level, temperature, mileage, warning lights, service messages, gear position and other driver information.

In modern vehicles, the instrument cluster is not just a display. It can also communicate with other vehicle modules, store vehicle data, process warning messages and form part of the vehicle’s communication network.

When the instrument cluster fails, the vehicle may show a blank display, incorrect readings, warning light faults, communication problems, missing pixels, flickering illumination or gauges that stop working.

U0155 – Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster
