What is a Body Control Module / BCM?

The BCM is the control unit behind many body electronics: lights, locks, windows, wipers, alarm, key recognition and communication with other vehicle systems.

The Body Control Module, often called a BCM, BSI, comfort control module, central electronics module or junction box module depending on the manufacturer, is a central control unit for many non-engine-related vehicle electrical systems.

It can control or coordinate functions such as central locking, alarm, interior and exterior lights, power windows, wipers, indicators, immobiliser communication, key recognition and other comfort or body electronics.

Because the BCM communicates with several other modules on the vehicle network, a fault can create a wide range of symptoms that may look unrelated at first.

Why a BCM fault can affect so many systems

A BCM fault can cause several electrical problems at the same time because the module often acts as a central controller or gateway for body electronics.

Common BCM fault symptoms

BCM faults can appear in many ways because the module controls or communicates with several body electrical systems. The exact cause may be the BCM itself, wiring, power supply, fuses, relays, grounds, water ingress or another module on the network.

Common fault codes linked to BCM problems

U0140 – Lost Communication With Body Control Module

The vehicle cannot communicate with the BCM. This may be caused by the BCM, wiring, power supply, network communication or another related module.

U1000 – CAN communication fault

A network communication fault that may affect communication between modules.

U3000 – Control module internal fault

Often used to indicate an internal control module fault, depending on manufacturer and diagnostic context.

U3000-49 – Internal electronic failure / control module fault

Reported on some body control / junction box applications, depending on vehicle and scan tool.

B10AA / B10AA-4A – Control module / communication related fault

May be linked to body electronics communication issues on some platforms. Diagnosis is required before confirming the failed component.

Key not recognised / immobiliser communication fault

The BCM may be involved in key recognition, locking or immobiliser communication on some vehicles.

Will the BCM need programming?

However, programming requirements depend on the vehicle, module type, fault and repair carried out. We will advise where additional coding, calibration, proxy alignment, key matching or diagnostic checks may be required after refitting.
